Catahoula Leopard Dog, North America’s Oldest Dog
April 15th, 2009
The origins of different dogs breeds is quite an interesting study. One of the most interesting ones is the origins of the Catahoula leopard dog mix. Long considered to be the oldest dog breed to exist in North America. The breed takes its name from Catahoula Parish, which is located in the state of Louisiana. It is also sometimes called that Catahoula Cur as well. It is believed that the Catahoula leopard dog mix originated from the breeding of what was known as “war dogs” or mastiffs and greyhounds that were brought to Louisiana by Hernando de Soto in the 16th century.
The dog has a long and interesting history with many well known historical people having owned this particular breed. Early American figures favored them, such as Jim Brown were known to sleep with his Catahoula at his feet. Even Former President Teddy Roosevelt had a catahoula leopard dog mix that he took hunting with him. Former Lousiana Governor Earl K. Long collected the breed.
This protective, friendly with family and territorial dog can be a wonderful pet. It is best to get the catahoula leopard dog mix young as they are sometimes rather reserved and wary around strangers. Therefore the younger they are the easier it is for them to become comfortable with you. They are very protective and will make a good guardian for children.
The dog needs to have time and attention and does not do well being left in the house alone all day and tied up or caged. It is best if there is someone that can spend at least part of the time with them during the day hours. in addition, you need to make sure that you can make time to take the dog on a good long walk each day. They need their time outside in order to do well.
The catahoula leopard dog mix is relatively free of a number of common dog illnesses and diseases. A few that they are prone to are hip dysplasia and eye problems. It is also not uncommon for them to get deafness in either one ear or even in both. However, compared to a number of other breeds, this one is considered to be quite healthy.
With its low grooming requirements due to its single cost, the catahoula can be an easy dog to have and maintain in any household. A fun and enjoyable pet to have, this breed is definitely a winner.
